Procedural Wood Material

Mastering Procedural Materials

As my main interest aside of hard-surface and weapons are materials, I challenged myself to push some boundaries of what I did before to become more proficient in materials creation.

I wanted to create a fully procedural material in Painter only within it's internal resources meaning no Adobe Substance Designer or other 3rd party tools involved. The main idea was to create a wood material fully procedural with some interesting modifiers.

Initially, the inclusion of moss in the material was not part of my original plan. I began by "blocking out" its features, employing unconventional red, yellow, and blue masks to assess the technical arrangement of layers and masks, while also considering the blending modes employed.
One particularly interesting aspect of this procedural wood and moss material is the way the moss growth affects the edges. Moss tends to take root and flourish in crevices and corners, gradually spreading outward. Revealing the moss is controlled with a single mask slider in Adobe Substance Painter.

I wanted to show the possibilities of procedural materials, artists can unleash their creativity and elevate their digital designs to new heights.
